There was a variety of ways, dependent on what aspect of mine or which domain they wished to appeal to. Worship helps strengthen any god, yes. In exchange for one's faith, we empower our proxies and adherents. It is akin to any business transaction, but worship is an expectation. A god is made to be adored.

i talked to a woman who said her god doesn't want them to tell outsiders about their worship. that struck me as strange, i thought a god would want to reach as many people as possible.
Some gods are not interested in reaching a vast number of adherents, only specific ones.
Worship is also — like a key, for a lock. You cannot replace one form with another, and expect it to resurrect a forgotten or dead god. At least, that is how it works in my world.
