FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The noncompliant, red-haired god of the desert is as disorderly and wrathful as myth suggests. To the naked eye, Set appears as a man in his early thirties, with brilliant red hair and eyes. Contrasting his Levantine origins, he is pale of skin and without blemish, scar or discernable marking; observing him for too long without pause evokes the image of boundless sands, a vaguely eldritch quality to his physical perfection and beauty that is readily tarnished by his unsavory, brash attitude and sharp tongue. He stands approximately 6'0"/184cm, leanly muscled and athletic in tone. Commonly, he wears a black shendyt, as well as gold jewelry. The red-and-black kohl around his eyes is applied by hand, rather than existing by the grace of his godhood, but the fullness of his mouth is au naturel.
Evoking the image of raw meat, Set's shard takes the form of a jagged-edged red jasper fissure, as though he has been flayed open. Measuring approximately 4"/~10.16cm, it is embedded over his heart, where his gold jewelry and long hair form a barrier that keep it largely hidden.
ASPECT TATTOO
Affiliated with the aspect of Savant, Set's tattoo is a black gear with spokes that sit between each knuckle of his right hand. It parallels the cursed mark on his left hand.
PERSONALITY
A violent tsundere with a highly independent streak and a lot of self-hatred.
BACKGROUND
CW SEXUAL ASSAULT, MASS MURDER ( EXPAND )The god of war exists to deliver Egypt from all threat, serving at the side of the supreme god as executor of his divine will. In mythology, Set exists as a complex and paradoxical figure: a protector and an usurper, the greatest evil known and the eternal protector of the sun itself, a god of peripheral existence and the integral piece of Egypt's politico-religious style of rulership. Set is the "red-headed stepchild" of the Ennead, used and manipulated for the betterment of mankind while seeking independence and acknowledgement for himself; yet, he is also a fully-fledged trickster, a warlord and monster who betrayed the order of all things and slew his brother to take the throne of Egypt for himself and ruled shoddily, violently, as Egypt fell into a period of decay.
Mojito's Ennead is an adaptation of Egyptian mythology, dealing largely with the betrayal and death of Osiris, the usurpation of the throne by Set and the contendings of Horus, the son of Osiris who returned to defeat the evil god and restore order to Egypt. In the adaptation, Set ( and many others ) serve as unreliable narrators, gods with personal stakes in the progression of history, whom share an intimate and direct relationship with the mortals of their lands. The series opens on Set already having murdered Osiris and taken the throne, leading to countless years of suffering, slaughter and depravity across the lands of Egypt. He largely seems unimpressed with ruling, preferring to drink, drug himself and revel in the mass-murder of women and children, until his sister, Isis, returns to Heliopolis with Horus, hers and Osiris's son, in tow to demand the throne be returned to the rightful rulers.
The two are locked into a trial by three, chosen by the order of the world itself and observed by Ma'at, daughter of Ra. If either Set, or Horus, were to win two of the three challenges, the throne would be proven to belong to them, and the other would be considered the illegal contender. As Horus and Set battle through wit and might, the story begins to allude to the reasons behind Set's sudden, violent assault on the throne and why, if he had loved his brother so much, he had carved Osiris into pieces and thrown him into the Nile. The truth of the matter, was that Osiris had always coveted Set for himself, and his yearning for the other god had transcended sanity, with Osiris concocting a plan over literal millennia to break Set's will and obtain him wholly. Using the soul of Set's son, Anubis, as a hostage and "prize" to be won by obedience, Osiris forced Set to submit and assaulted him him, betraying the bond the four children of Geb and Nut had shared.
In retaliation, Set killed the god of life himself, and cast his brother into Duat -- trapping him there, to become the god of the dead. In his madness and despair, he withdrew into himself and elected to become a despot, so as to never be hurt again by anyone -- leading to his taking the throne and indulging in slaughter and hedonism. With Horus claiming victory over him in the end, Set is taken before the Ennead to be judged for his crimes. Not wanting the truth of his assault and thus, his emasculation, to be heard by anyone ( let along his wife and child ), Set demands death -- only to be supported by Horus, who vows that Set will never have to face such a trial. Instead, Set agrees to be punished eternally; he is to serve as psychopomp to the souls of the humans, largely women and children, that he cruelly treated and denied their proper place in Duat, and once he alleviates that pain, he will return to Heliopolis and be given to Ra, to serve aboard her barque for all eternity.
Banished from Heliopolis and stripped of his full divinity, Set-the-demigod travels Egypt alone to perform his penance. Along the way, meeting a sly foreigner who becomes his attendant, while also dealing with the repeated visitations by Horus -- and the presence of a newly-risen god of death: his amnesiac son, Anubis.
Writing Style: I lean towards using [ brackets ] over all else, but have experience in paragraph roleplay.
Backtagging: I live off of backtagging. As long as the thread is moving along, I'll backtag into oblivion.
Threadhopping: I don't mind, unless the thread is obviously a private affair. When in doubt, ask me!
Offensive Subjects: I'm not keen on gratuitous animal torture, but it is a soft limit when for narrative purpose. I also ask that, although this is a faction game that has a competitive lean, Set's sexual abuse is NOT used for the purpose of 'getting ahead' or as propaganda/a social maneuver against him. It is for CR purposes only! <3
IN CHARACTER
Physical Violence: Anything and everything. As god of war and former tyrant of Egypt, Set’s history with violence is varied and far-reaching. While known as the most powerful deity in the Ennead, Set has been essentially demoted to the rank of a demigod - he's stronger and more durable than the average human, but I have no issue with having him kick ass OR having his ass kicked. I actually enjoy using him to give the "hurt" half of the "hurt/comfort" everyone's known to love.
Death/Dissipation: Yes! Massacre and martyr him. He's hard to kill, but it is satisfying when u get his ass.
Physical Affection: Yes! Please note that for #reasons, Set is revolted by unexpected/unwanted physical contact, and rather mistrustful of given affection; he may prove dismissive of attempts, to varying degrees. Repeated attempts may be met with hostility, if he feels his boundaries are being disrespected. He prefers to be the one "on the attack", and has a very toxic and detrimental view of masculinity and manhood at this time in his development.
Shipping/Sex: Romancing him is highly difficult, because of his high degree of independence from attachments and the effects of sexual abuse on his psyche. He is known for being a god of “indiscriminate sexuality”, and throughout Egyptian myth has been noted to have relationships with men and women alike. Likely he'll be a teaser, rather than a pleasure, and his appetites are impartial to infighting among others. We love a bisexual deity! Wh*re gods, unite!
Mental/Communion: Acceptable! Please reach out to me for unique challenges and consequences if you're digging through. His mind straddles the boundary between "knowable by mortal standards", in the sense that he has emotions and similarities to most people, but also has an extended consciousness/elevated sense of self/eldritch aspect to his mind that can prove painful for some to look upon.
█ Galaniel Lemarten V Mordigaeus ——— Penitent Redeemer of the Martyr
Akin to an angelic insectoid, Galaniel (he/they) hails from an extragalactic composite species that formerly comprised an entire space-faring ecosystem comprised of innumerable different bioforms which are all variations on the same genetic theme. Formerly a high-ranking Swarmlord of the Haruspex Cadavi, Galaniel was a harvester of genetic materials and worlds, seeking domination of worlds via subterfuge, infestation and patient hibernation as the numbers of his Swarm would replicate.
For reasons unknown, Galaniel supposedly became disillusioned with the Hivemind and ultimately, experienced a mental and psychological schism that led him to annihilate his faction and seek his own demise. However, the destruction of the Haruspex Cadavi left Galaniel stranded in Kenos, and his Swarmship buried deep on one of the islands associated with Kenos. He joined the Meridian faction in the hopes of redemption through service, and was paired with Set due to their similarity in such; Galaniel seeks not the destruction of other worlds, but the ability to leave his past behind and live a faithful, quiet life in the homeworld of any other Meridian Shard-bearer.
Upon entry into the Church of Helios, Set requested an aide to assist him in daily activities, to learn the lessons and ways of the Church, and was permitted his choice of the young acolytes. Erigeneia ( she/they ) is an ambitious, devout creature who had been dedicated by her Meridian-worshipping bloodline at birth to serve the Church, in the hopes that offering their youngest, purest soul to the light of hope itself would absolve them of their past — their affiliation with Zenith and Highstorm, from which they had turned for reasons known only to them and the Church itself.
A imp-like creature of dark heritage, Erigeneia is well-versed in song, rhetoric, and the illusion-based magics of her lineage, although she has long spurned the use of her native talents in favor of learning all that Meridian has to offer. She serves the Church, ultimately, but exists as an extension of Set's eyes and ears, his aide and mentor in many ways. Her ambition unmatched, she dreams of a day where she will be invaluable to the Hieropoios, to Meridian itself, and will seize any opportunity to serve the light whole-heartedly.
He is largely unconcerned with the battle for the Oracles, and comes down on Meridian's side solely because he seeks the reinstatement of Ra's creation, rather than the creation of something new. As far as he is concerned, Ra's creation of the world and her presence as supreme authority of the gods ( even if he calls her a hag and bickers with her ) was the will of the world itself, and deviation from that/influence from external forces is a crime. He considers the end of his world a deviation, rather than proper history.
Bound by his promise to his son, Set has elected to make every attempt to bring the world he must atone to back, instead of running away from the sins he has committed. In speaking with Yima, he has admitted that his heart strays more towards Zenith's goal -- he would far prefer to leave his world destroyed and remake something better for his family, for his son. However, because he has given his promise to Anubis, and Horus's presence influences him to continue to try despite his despairing, he joined the Meridian side.
In being ON the Meridian side, however, his goals begin to flourish in favor of selfish pursuits. He seeks power, divinity and might upon the field of battle concerning the Oracles, but also has begun to focus on the implicit "threat" imposed to the balance of Kenos itself.
To this end, Set is slowly resolving to bearing the mantle of "greatest evil", accepting the carnage, chaos and strife caused by the Oracle battles unto himself as dedication and sacrifice. I've every intention of this corrupting him, so that even if he achieves his goal, he cannot partake in the world he's restored or made. He intends to bear the sins of both Meridian and Zenith as they seek their dreams, and is fully willing to commit to destroying those who are unsound of conviction, and/or ending the dreams of those he must eliminate in the process of attaining his own end.
Though he has an end in mind, he is still hedonistic and pleasure-seeking, treating Kenos's existence as his own playground and the Oracle battles as his rightful domain to distract from his own trauma and despair. Can't let the bad thoughts reach you and detract from your willpower! He will continue to do as he pleases and prove a dangerously solitary figure in the coming battles.
He struggles to divorce himself from others, to remain untouchable and independent, yet is readily impassioned by the convictions and values of others. Despite his alien mindset and rough manner, he cares deeply for the Shardbearers who vie for the power to make their dreams a reality and tries to hide it. His care for them is not exclusive, however, of his ability or willingness to trod upon them in the end.
Set's ultimate goal is to keep the promise he made to Anubis. Without that promise, he would leave his old world to its fate and be on the side of Zenith - except not really, even then. Set's mind is alien and deeply unfathomable, he seeks to destroy as it is in his nature, just as warfare and the act of war is as well; wherever there is conflict, the god of war is there. The battle for the Oracles is as natural a place he could find himself as the battlefields of Earth, and so he sees nothing abnormal about being in Kenos -- in fact, he views Kenos as an extension of his domain. Breaking his goals down into how he views everything and everyone as "his" is, in fact, how to understand what he wants and how he will seek it.
I. Keep his promise to Anubis. To accomplish this, Set knows he must restore his destroyed world, which falls in line with the goals of Meridian. This is the sole reason he is on Meridian's side, despite being an evil god known for disorder and chaos.
II. Defy Osiris. In seeking the rebirth (or new birth!) of his world, he is both actively and subconsciously attempting to resist the curse that Osiris, the god of life, imprinted into him -- that without Osiris, there is no life Set can take and no thing that he can create. Osiris made Set discredit himself. In being shown a vision/warning by the Tree of Life, in which the Lady Yima met Osiris at the Tree, embraced him and offered him the same flower she offered Set, he has found himself revolted by Zenith — viewing the faction as one that would harbor victims alongside their abusers without condemning the cruel and making safe the ones who need it.
II. Combat his own disillusionment and trauma. Not an active thought in his head, but both a subconscious one and one on a meta-level for me. Set has several issues: he is deeply independent and cannot easily connect with others' emotions or thoughts, he has an ingrained sense of weakness and vulnerability that has been repeatedly exacerbated by the curse Osiris's levied upon him, and he can and will gravitate towards sinister, often evil, acts -- reaping souls, using people selfishly for his own needs/desires and surrounding himself with distractions from the pains he feels. He is both intensely human in his qualities, and infinitely unknowable -- one does not argue with or pity a hurricane, after all.

MERIDIAN OR ZENITH?
Set is paradoxical.
He is largely unconcerned with the battle for the Oracles, and comes down on Meridian's side solely because he seeks the reinstatement of Ra's creation, rather than the creation of something new.
